A Headline I'd Never Believe As Real: Mitt Romney Warns The NCAA 'We're Coming For You'
[Source] – Congress reconvened Tuesday for the first time since California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed his state’s law, and on Wednesday politicians from both the House of Representatives and the Senate met to discuss the best way to move forward.
“The reality is Congress is going to act,” U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said Wednesday. “We’re coming for you, [NCAA].”
Well, this is just something I’d never believe as real. But here we are and I actually love it. We have people from all over the political spectrum talking about trying to do one thing. Change the NCAA. I love it. Spare me the ‘think of what else they can fix.’ We’re talking about the NCAA and NCAA only here.
Look, I don’t care how it happens, but I want the NCAA to adjust. I don’t think I’ve hid that fact. We need to let players make money off of name, image and likeness. I say it every time in every blog. Schools offering scholarships is their form of payment and that’s enough from the school. Let the free market dictate what someone is worth. Also, why do we care if a hoops player from Kansas gets $10,000 from a car dealership? College sports hasn’t been pure ever, so making it open doesn’t change that fact.
So yeah, if this happens on the national level, good for them. I do like this quote. This tells me it’s serious.
Other lawmakers also have shown an interest in working with the NCAA to find a solution if the association is willing to changes its ways. U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., and the co-sponsor of the tax code proposal, said Wednesday he was hoping the NCAA would “find their own inner angel” and propose a better way forward.
“If the NCAA wanted to make this fair, they could find a way to do it,” Richmond said. “The point is the NCAA has proven unwilling to address this.”
Put it on the NCAA to make a change. They are willing to work with the NCAA, so now make the NCAA do something. Call them out for being unwilling to address change. It’s all true and the more it’s talked about, the more pressure there will be.
